The first few weeks of school are busy. Between learning new routines, getting through schedules, and starting lessons, it can be hard to find time to really get to know your students. A few simple activities can help break the ice and give students a chance to share a little about themselves while getting to know their classmates.
And the best part? These activities require very little prep.
Here are five easy ways to get students talking:
1. Find Someone Who…
Give students a list of things to find out about their classmates. Maybe they’re looking for someone who has a brown dog, whose favorite subject is science, has visited a national park, or loves to play Fortnite. Students move around the room asking questions and check off their finds. It’s a simple way to get everyone talking to each other.
2. Two Truths and a Lie
Have students share three things about themselves — two that are true and one that isn’t. Their classmates then try to figure out which one is the lie. Students can ask questions along the way, which can lead to some interesting conversations!
3. Would You Rather?
Give students two fun choices, ask them to pick one, and explain why. Would they rather explore the deep ocean or outer space? Travel to Egypt or Japan? Students can share their answers with a partner or small group and see who agrees with them.
4. Common Ground Challenge
Put students into small groups and give them a few minutes to find things they all have in common. Challenge them to find some unexpected connections. Does everyone have a sister? Does everyone have the same favorite color? They may be surprised by how much they have in common with classmates they have just met.
5. All About Me
Ask students to choose five things that tell their classmates something about them. They might choose a favorite food, hobby, book, place, family tradition, activity, or something they hope to do someday. Students can share their five things with a partner or small group. Or use a simple All About Me template and present it to the class.

The first few weeks of school are a great time to let your students get to know each other and their new teacher! A few minutes of conversation can reveal shared interests, spark new friendships, give you a better sense of your new students, and help build a community to start the year off strong.
